Did you know that CbusFoodBloggers consists of over 50 different bloggers/instagrammers? Some of us you may already stalk follow, and others you haven’t yet had the chance to meet! In an effort to help our readers get to know us and the bloggers behind our group, we conduct monthly interview highlighting one of our members. This month, we have Laura from Cuisine and Cocktails!

Cuisine and Cocktials

  1. How did you become a food blogger? What is the theme of your blog/IG?

I became a food blogger/instagrammer after I had friends and family frequently request recipes for food or cocktails I made for events. I always considered it such a compliment and loved to share my creations, so I decided to create a blog to post my recipes and showcase them on instagram! At first I started with only sharing dishes and drinks I made myself, but I’m always going out to bars and restaurants and actually spent many years working as a bartender/in the service industry. I love suggesting places for people to go so more recently I started posting those experiences on my blog/instagram thanks to a suggestion from my friend Kristen! My content on Cuisine & Cocktails has something for everyone! From recipes made from scratch to quick and easy workday meals, comfort/indulgent food, healthy recipes, vegan, low-carb etc. as well as reviews on bars/restaurants and every kind of cocktail!

  1. What is your favorite thing to cook for yourself or others?

That’s a really hard one and depends on my mood! More recently though I’d have to say pasta from scratch. My grandma got me a KitchenAid mixer with pasta attachment for my wedding last year which makes it 100 times easier, and I love coming up with new pasta dishes! From a cocktail standpoint my husband just got me a cocktail smoker which adds the perfect flavor for the cool winter months, and I’ve had a great time making new drinks with it!

  1. What makes the Columbus food scene great? Or what would you change?

The Columbus food scene is great, because it is constantly expanding and evolving. I’m  amazed at how often new, impressive spots are popping up around town. I also love the diversity of restaurants as well as how many places can now accommodate so many different diets. One thing I’d change is the common misconception about the Columbus food scene elsewhere, especially in larger cities. I travel a lot and am especially in NYC on a regular basis for work, and some of the people I meet out as well as some of my coworkers there are surprised when I tell them about how much of a foodie city Columbus is. Part of why I love having my blog/instagram is not just to show people in Columbus the best places to dine or drink but people outside of Columbus as well!

  1. What restaurant(s) is at the top of your “must try” list?

Restoration Hardware

Sow Plated

  1. What’s (and where) the most memorable meal/dish you had recently?

Hmmm that’s a tough one. I just got back from St Lucia so lots of fresh seafood/Caribbean Jerk still on my mind! Locally though I’d probably have to say Jeff Ruby’s pops out the most. We’ve been there several times, and they never disappoint from quality of food to service. The meal I mostly recently was impressed by started out with oysters and sushi (love the Hamachi Chuukara Roll with serrano-Yellowtail – yum) and finished with a Collinsworth filet and loaded potato gratin. And now I’m drooling.

  1. Give us the inside scoop — what’s your favorite happy hour, hole in the wall, or hidden gem in Columbus?

I really love Denmark on High. Being a cocktail girl, their ever-changing seasonal drink list always keeps my attention. Their bartenders are highly experienced and creative. I love the lounge feel overlooking High Street. They also have great happy hour deals (half off drinks) which goes until 6:30 and even extends to Saturday! I adore places that let you happy hour on the weekend. And places that have happy hour past 6pm for those of us who don’t work downtown! Denmark also has an event space you can rent out, the Secret Cellar, which is super cool. One of their bartenders actually just started hosting cocktail bar pop-ups down there – pay attention to Seance Columbus insta for upcoming dates if you’re into the themed speakeasy thing.

  1. What is your favorite locally made food product?

This is a really hard one because how can you pick just one?! So many talented local businesses in Columbus. I think I’d have to go with Spritz Sparkling Tea though. I love sparkling beverages and these are some of the best I’ve sampled. All on their own or mixed into an alcoholic drink – you can’t go wrong. I also adore their badass female founder Kathryn Dougherty. I was invited to an event with Spritz recently where I got to come up with some cocktails for their website (check them out – the Carolina Herrera and Sheryl Sandberg are mine) and had so much fun hanging out with a strong group of women who were full of positivity and empowerment. Also the teas are zero cals so that’s always a plus. 😉

  1. Some of us are not full-time bloggers. If you are not, what is your “real” job?

When I’m not blogging, you can find me developing and regulating drugs & cosmetics for Bath & Body Works, Victoria’s Secret & PINK. My career incorporates science, business, law and constantly evolving beauty trends in an extremely fast-paced high-volume environment. I’m definitely never bored!

  1. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!

I’m a huge animal lover and have three Siamese cats (Prue, Piper and Penny). My husband and I just bought a house in Old Oaks Historic District in downtown Columbus and our house is a complete flip. Being in our new house and neighborhood I’ve started helping out with the overpopulation of stray cats and getting involved with TNR (trap, neuter, release). My first attempt went well… until the release phase as I now have a fourth cat named Smokey living in my house and currently sitting in my lap as I type this – whoops, but the others I’m planning to bring into the vet are either true ferals or I will be looking for homes for them in the near future!

Thanks Laura! Be sure to check our her website and Instagram.

  1. You definitely need to get to Comune, especially since you live so close! I walk there for lunch from work sometimes but have yet to go for dinner. As for Denmark YES! One of the best cocktail bars in town for sure. I hope it sticks around after many others have closed. And you already know I am all about cats. I would totally save them all if Bob would let me.
