In an effort to help our readers get to know us and the bloggers behind our group, we conduct monthly interview highlighting one of our members. This month, we have Rachel Dougherty from Fierce_Foodie!

  1. How did you become a food blogger? What is the theme of your blog/IG?

I’d say the theme of my Instagram is adventure because I share more than food, it’s like a ongoing scrapbook of whatever is going on in my life. Food has always been a passion of mine, when I have a great experience nothing gives me more joy than sharing that with others.

  1. What is your favorite thing to cook for yourself or others?

Breakfast is by far my favorite meal to prepare and partake in. It’s a true labor of love to get out of bed early enough to make someone you care for a stack of pancakes. I also enjoy baking just about any kind of sweet treat. I have fond memories of making hundreds of Christmas cookies with my grandmother each year and sneaking bites of frosting while she wasn’t looking.

  1. What makes the Columbus food scene great? Or what would you change?

I’ve only lived in Columbus for about eight years but I feel like the food scene is growing stronger all the time. Our city has all the components to make it a premier food destination from its diverse cultures, up-and-coming chefs, to culinary powerhouses like Cameron Mitchell. The nation should keep its eye on Columbus; we are just getting started.

  1. What restaurant(s) is at the top of your “must try” list?

I have been wanting to try Vaso Dublin for a few months now. I’ve heard that they have incredible cocktails and tapas. Also, who doesn’t want to try that ceviche? I like to take everyone visiting Columbus from out of town to Brown Bag Deli. A deli might seem like an odd choice but I feel like it’s a really great representation of what Columbus is all about. Everyone at Brown Bag is always friendly, the space is tight but cozy, and the food is simple, fresh, and wonderful. Pair all that with the ability to take your meal to go and stroll down the streets of German Village to Schiller park and you have a great Columbus experience.

  1. What’s (and where) the most memorable meal/dish you had recently?

Without question the most memorable meal I’ve had in Columbus was at Veritas. It’s not often that I have a whole tasting where I don’t feel like I would have changed one single thing, I left with a feeling of absolute awe. The Chefs, the wait staff, and the atmosphere all come together perfectly to make for an unforgettable evening. When you go you must get the 9 courses, you don’t want to miss out on even one bite of food from this gem.

  1. Give us the inside scoop — what’s your favorite happy hour, hole in the wall, or hidden gem in Columbus?

Prohibition Gastro Lounge in Powell is my hidden gem. This Powell area favorite is the home of my favorite cocktail in Columbus the Kentucky rain! A blend of Four Roses Small Batch, Jalapeño Infused Agave, Lime & Fleur de Sel is incredible. If tequila isn’t your thing don’t worry, their cocktail list is vast and features over 160 types of whiskey, bourbon, and scotch.

  1. What is your favorite locally made food product?

Our city is home to so many great local products it’s hard to choose! I think the breads from Omega Bakery at the North Market are something special. Their mastery over classic and avante-garde recipes astounds me. The focaccia is loaded with garlic, herbs, olive oil, and just the right amount of salt making it the perfect addition to any meal. They recently started offering the sweet and savory Kouign-Amann! This little pastry has worked its way to the top of my list after trying it for the first time at Omega, imagine a croissant and creme brulee had a baby yeah it’s that good.

  1. Some of us are not full-time food bloggers. If you are not, what is your “real” job?

My Instagram is definitely just something I do for fun, I’ve managed a gourmet olive oil and balsamic shop in the north market for the last four years. It’s the perfect mix of meeting new people and talking about food, I absolutely love it!

  1. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!

I’m really into video games and the gaming community. I have traveled across the country for different conventions and met some of my closest friends through the gaming world. Videogames is always a great way for me to let out my very competitive nature 1 v. 1 me bro!

  1. How fun I didn’t know that you managed the olive oil and vinegar shop at the North Market! Also we are currently planning an event in Powell so hopefully we can check out Prohibition Gastro Lounge. It’s been on my list!
