To those of you that were saddened 2 years ago when Red Velvet Cafe discontinued their brunch menu – weekend brunch is back! 

In case you didn’t hear the news, Red Velvet Cafe brought back their brunch menu and it’s nothing short of delicious. But they wanted to make sure it was different than the brunch featured at their sister restaurant, Bonifacio.

The new menu features childhood favorites of Filipino Americans. It may not be traditional Filipino food, but the dishes are unique and reflective of what it is like to be Filipino growing up in America.

Let’s start with the peanut butter, jelly, and banana French toast. The idea simply came from childhood favorite of a PBJ+B sandwich turned into French toast. But to elevate it they used caramelized plantains which are traditional to Filipino food. For the jelly they used blueberry because it’s one of the few fruits that crossed over to the Philippines from America. Then, instead of peanut butter they used a chocolate peanut butter candy called Choc*Nut. Don’t forget the dollop of whipped cream on top!

Next we tried their version of a chicken and biscuit sandwich. This creation combines the two genres of food by topping an ube purple biscuit with garlic pork sausage (longanisa) gravy, boneless fried chicken, fried egg, pickled red onion, and cayenne honey butter.

Love brisket hash for brunch? You’re going to want to try their Kaldereta hash. Kaldereta is a traditional Filipino savory tomato based stew that they used in a hash complete with ube potatoes, bell peppers, carrots, brisket, fried egg, and of course the kaldereta gravy.

Last but not least, the very Instagrammable ube pancakes. These beautiful purple ube pancakes are layered with ube butter, coconut caramel jam, and fresh fruit and topped off with whipped cream and yes those are Fruity Pebbles. What Filipino-American, or heck anyone, could resist that stack?

 

Of course you can’t forget their selection of beverages to pair with your brunch including espresso, coffee, tea and bubble tea! Pictured is the most popular milk tea, Taro bubble tea.

If you are somehow still hungry after their filling brunch, there’s also cookies (such as the jumbo chewy chocolate chip cookie picture below) and a daily assortment of cupcakes. If you’re an ube fan you might be lucky enough to visit on a day that they have ube cupcakes!
